This morning, at the Century 16 movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, James Holmes used three guns to shoot 71 people in two minutes. Twelve people died. Police report that he acted alone.
What happens if we apply the same logic, used by Obama recently to describe how business owners owe their success to society, to this tragic event.
Here is Obama’s original quote to which he received accolades from the crowd:
“If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”
If we believe Obama is correct for his commendations of society for the success of business then it only makes sense that the opposite would have to be true. Society is also to blame for the actions of James Holmes. When someone succeeds it’s everyone who should be paid, but when someone murders 12 people in a movie theater, he acted alone. You can’t have it both ways.
I wonder if Obama’s followers would sing his praises if he used the same reasoning to describe today’s tragic, senseless shooting. If he had, it may have gone something like this…
If you were successful at killing 12 people and injuring 59 more in a movie theater, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a terrible teacher somewhere in you life. Somebody helped to create the state of affairs that we have that allowed you to kill. Somebody invested in roads and bridges that enabled you to get to the theater. If you’ve got a gun and tactical armor, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.
Can you see the absurdity in this line of thinking now?
